There’s a lot happening in Southeast Asia, and it’s exciting to see.
From AI and technology to manufacturing, healthcare and climate solutions, businesses across the region are coming up with new ideas and finding ways to solve real problems.
I recently had the opportunity to attend SWITCH (Singapore Week of Innovation &
Technology) at Marina Bay Sands, where I met other founders, investors, startups, and business leaders from across the region.
Walking around the event and speaking with people made one thing clear to me: Southeast Asia is a region that global businesses should be paying attention to.
And it’s not just about technology. It’s also about the people and businesses behind it.
SWITCH Singapore: A Look at What's Happening Across the Region
SWITCH brings together startups, investors, large companies, researchers and government representatives to share ideas and explore new business opportunities.
What caught my attention was the range of ideas coming from different parts of Southeast Asia.
From climate technology helping improve supply chains to AI solutions built for local markets, there’s a lot of work happening across the region.
It’s also a good reminder that Southeast Asia isn’t one single market. Every country has its own business environment, talent pool, regulations and opportunities.
For companies looking to grow their market, understanding these differences is important.
Why Businesses Are Looking at Southeast Asia
There are several reasons why companies are exploring opportunities in this region.
1. Access to More Talent
Southeast Asia has a growing workforce with experience across technology, engineering, finance, customer service and business operations.
For companies looking to grow, this creates opportunities to find people with the skills they
need.
But hiring in the region isn’t the same everywhere. Salary expectations, recruitment practices and the availability of talent can vary from one country to another.
Knowing where to look makes a big difference.
2. A Growing Technology Industry
The region is seeing more activity in AI, biotech, fintech, manufacturing and other technology
sectors.
For technology companies, this creates opportunities to build teams and work with professionals in different markets.
The important thing is choosing the country that makes most sense for your business, balancing key factors like labor costs, tax rates, market access, regulatory stability, and skill availability.
3. Opportunities to Grow Across Multiple Countries
Some companies start by hiring in one Southeast Asian country and later decide to expand into
others.
That’s where things can become more complicated. Setting up a legal entity, opening local bank accounts, managing payroll and understanding employment laws all take time and resources.
And if you’re planning to hire in several countries, you’ll need to understand the requirements in
each one.
The good news is that setting up your own company in every country isn’t always necessary to start building an international team.
Business Opportunities in Southeast Asia? Don't Forget About Your People
When exploring business opportunities in Southeast Asia, it’s natural to focus on market potential, new customers and revenue growth. But there’s another important part of the expansion plan that shouldn’t be overlooked: building the right team to make it happen.
Before entering a new market, business leaders should consider how they’ll find, hire and manage local talent while meeting each country’s employment requirements.
How are you going to build and manage your team once you get there?
Hiring internationally comes with responsibilities, and these are some of the things companies need to consider:
Employment laws: Every country has different rules around contracts, employee benefits, leave and termination.
Payroll: Salaries, taxes and statutory contributions need to be handled according to local
requirements.
Recruitment: Finding the right people means understanding the local job market and salary
expectations.
Work permits and visas: If you’re bringing in foreign employees, you’ll need to understand the immigration requirements.
Employee support: Your team needs proper support, clear communication and someone who understands local employment practices.
These things may not be the most exciting part of international expansion, but getting them right from the beginning can save a lot of time and trouble later.
Is Southeast Asia Your Next Move?
My time at SWITCH Singapore was a great reminder of how much is happening across the
region.
There are exciting businesses being built, new ideas coming to life and plenty of opportunities for companies willing to explore new markets.
But successful expansion takes more than a good business idea. You need the right people, the right setup and the right support.
If you’re thinking about hiring in the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia or other Asian markets, it’s worth understanding your options before making your next move.
